Rubric

A rubric is a set of criteria used for assessing an essay answer. Rubric assessments are far more descriptive and useful than a single, holistic grade. You can create rubrics for your essay questions, easily grade student essays, and create detailed reports based on student results.

To create/edit a rubric:

  1. Edit an existing essay question or click the New Question button and choose to create an essay question.

  2. Click the Info tab.

  3. Click Info and Objectives.

  4. Click Edit in the Rubric section of the Question Information window.

  5. Select the Number of criteria for your rubric. Criteria are the standards or objectives against which the answer is evaluated.

  6. Enter criteria text in the cells of the Criteria column. For example, a sample criteria could be "Mechanics: spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization." In Publisher Mode, you can enter an ID so that you can reuse the criteria description in multiple rubrics. For example, MECH could be used as the ID for the sample criteria above.

  7. Select the Number of indicators for the criteria. Indicators are the descriptions of the different scoring levels for a particular criteria.

  8. If necessary, edit the indicator names and point values as desired.

  9. Enter indicator text in the appropriate cells. For example, using the Mechanics criteria the Mastery indicator could be "No errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization." The Failure indicator could be "Multiple errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and/or capitalization that are distracting to the reader."

  10. Click OK to record your rubric.

  11. Click OK to record the question information.

  12. If necessary, edit the point value for the question in the question editor. (Essay questions are often worth more than the default value of 1 point.)

  13. Click OK to record the question.
